Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father's death in the role of a carnival barker at the age of a little girl and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She was a student in Boston. She left school after two years, to go into acting. The path she chose to take turned out to be filled with challenges and in New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills in a magazine for crime, but theatrical work eluded her. Following a short time as a club hat girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave the job she was working in. The city of Boston was in which she was employed during the late night, she was an actor for New England Repertory Company and during the day, was an usherette. The study of drama helped her to earn her degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
